An excerpt:
In 2010, a photo on a desk at Simpson Marine's Port Dickson office stopped me cold. "Call Robert Fernandez," they said. "If you're lucky, he'll show you." Over coffee in KL, Robert - grinning like the man who'd bottled lightning - explained his obsession: Fernandez Team Racing, a stable of a dozen F3000 tunnel boats. "Like F1, but affordable." His passion was contagious. "We test engines every Monday at 7:30 AM. Be at Puchong Lake."
I went. The howl of a two-stroke echoed across the water, and suddenly a boat materialised, slung around a buoy, and vanished. Robert's son Kane was at the wheel. Minutes later, Kane popped the canopy: "Only one way to understand an F3000. Hop in."
And just like that, I was in the cockpit. "Trim like this on straights, like this in corners. Keep it under 4,500 rpm today." Surreal doesn't cover it... Fifteen years on, I'm still part of the Fernandez crew but it feels like family - a tank-solid unit fueled by brotherly rivalry and Shell Racing flames.
